Raman spectroscopy offers numerous distinct advantages over other types of spectroscopic detection techniques, including infrared adsorption and fluorescence. These include:
• Chemical specificity: can distinguish between nitroamine high explosives (RDX) and HMX (cyclotetramethylene tetranitroamine),
• No sample prep is required,
• Raman is unaffected by strong infrared absorbers like water, CO2 and glass,
• When examining mixtures, spatial resolutions are greater with Raman than those obtained with infrared or fluorescence because shorter wavelengths of light are used for excitation, and
• The shorter wavelength enables penetration and detection of substances present within colored glass or plastic containers. |
